JULY 2020: THE SADLY FAMOUS GROUNDING OF MV WAKASHIO

On the 25th July at around 1930 LT, a Cape Size bulk carrier ran aground the south east coast of Mauritius, next to one of the most beautiful and protected area of the island. Upon receiving the first call, Immersub mobilized a team to carry out the preliminary casualty report which has been held to the salvers. Each day an emergency response team was deployed to the casualty site to collect data for the salvers. The team has been able to provide crucial assistance to the salvage team during the entire salvage operation.

Unfortunately, on the 6th of August, the vessel started to break into two pieces as it was alongside the reef. On this date, the country faced its first and worst oil spill, into the crystal clear lagoon of Pointe D’Esny. Our team managed to minimize the impact of the spill using the oil booms and skimmers. From dawn to nightime and with the outstanding help of the Mauritian community, hundred tons of oil have been contained and pumped for ashore disposal.

The team of Immersub would like to express it sincere thanks and congratulations to the entire Mauritian community for showing the entire world how solidarity looks like in Mauritius. Hats off.
